The Painting

love may be as real as the woman in the painting

she sits cross legged on a bed of grass

smirking

[in another portrait she might’ve cried]

so much dry grass

empty space

a hole in her heart

growing

the longer I look the more I feel the weight of her sadness

and the silent urge to set her free
